WHEN CELEBRITIES BECOME THE OBJECT OF WORSHIP

“And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” Luke 4:8

It seems like almost daily we are seeing someone famous going out into eternity and the world once again asks the question – why? It must be understood that no one leaves this world by mere chance, actually, when someone dies, whether it be an elderly person who has seen their life come to a conclusion, or, in the case of a popular actor or singer, the plan has been long planned. However, there are instances in the lives of those who live outside the principles of the gospel who do in fact die prematurely and it is solely due to one thing, they reaped from walking with the enemy – Satan.

When Satan came before the throne, God asked him his purpose and Satan replied that he was walking the earth looking for someone to test, God’s answer was simple, “Have you considered my servant Job?” In short, God gave Satan power over Job to do anything he desired, only he could not take his life, proving what we understand now and that is that those who are outside the protection of Christ and what he did on the cross are subject to Satan. That is why it is so important that we understand the dynamics of the spiritual battle taking place in our world today.

But what has concerned me more when a popular, or “famous” individual passes is the reaction of many Christians. Too many times I’ve counted of the comments and behavior or reaction by those who call themselves “Christians” reacting to the death of someone they in essence “worshiped” and when that person dies it becomes a spiritual day of mourning. But why? What is it about someone famous who captures the heart of a believer to the extent that they almost weep and mourn and lift up someone who didn’t live a righteous life? It’s because we have allowed the spirit of the world to enter not just into the church, but that same spirit has entered into our personal life.

Yes, it’s a tragic thing to see someone pass suddenly, especially at a young age, no one wants to see that individual die, but that by no way suggests that we should ever praise or celebrate someone who has lived a life of worldly pleasure, actually the opposite. When someone promotes sin, through the medium of film and television, as well as their personal life and they die, we should not weep for their great loss at entertaining us, no, we should weep for one reason and one reason only – a soul has went out into eternity without Christ.

The modern church today has done everything it can to bring in idol worship and for many, the worship of Hollywood actors, people who literally play make believe, are raised to a level of worship that on some levels equals to those who have died for the faith in the past. It’s simply not scriptural. Leviticus 26:1 says, “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God.” God hasn’t changed – we have.

That’s the real problem in America – idol worship. We make mini-gods of celebrities and we justify it because they are attractive, they produce captivating entertainment (movies) or maybe they sing beautifully. The problem is, most who are on that level of popularity are not saved and have no knowledge of Christ, actually, most denounce the Biblical form of salvation and instead promote ideas and beliefs which run counter to the word. But some say, “They are nice people, they do good deeds.” So what!? I can name MANY false religions who do good deeds, but it’s not works that save us, it’s the cross, the blood of Jesus Christ which saves us.

One cannot sit at the table of God and drink from the cup of Satan, it cannot work and those who try end up worse than they were before. Here is what the Apostle Paul stated in 1 Corinthians 10:21 “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.” There MUST be a complete and full separation from this world and the believer. That literally means we do not praise or celebrate someone who clearly did not know Christ and promoted a life of sin, endorse it and then praise them for all the earthly good they did – that is blasphemous! Why? Because for the Christian in general, nothing should ever invade into the life of the believer which is shrouded in darkness. That is why we are not of this world, meaning, the movies, the entertainment, the idol worship which the world celebrates should not be found on the lips of the believer – ever. (Romans 12:2)

More so, listen to the words of Paul about this; 2 Corinthians 6:15 “What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?” You see, there must be a complete separation from this world, and that includes what we allow into our spirit. The spirit of this world.

It must be understood that we are pilgrims here and we are just passing through, this is not our home, and because it’s not our home, those things that try to captivate our lives do so to do one thing, take our eyes off the cross and Christ. That is the reason why it is essential that we have no associations with those things in the world, including our favorite movie actor or pop singer or even sports player.

The object of our worship must always be in Christ and Christ alone, not celebrating those who walk in darkness, who stand opposed to the gospel and/or showed no signs whatsoever that the gospel had changed them to begin with. Many times I get asked, “But so and so was a Christian” really? Does a Christian sleep with the opposite sex and not married? Does a Christian promote R rated movies which glorify sex, nudity, drugs, an immoral lifestyle? If they are a true, genuine believer, they would STOP doing what glorifies the world and follow Christ and come OUT of that system. Let me remind the believer and all those who try to live one foot in the world and one foot in the cross what the word says, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2:15

Hollywood is a system created to deceive, there is nothing good which can come or does come from the den of wickedness called Hollywood, and for those who think they can use the tools of Satan and live for Christ, it’s not possible. You either hate the one and love the other or you reject the one and embrace the other, there can be no unification of darkness and light. James 4:4 “You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”

To love this things of this world, to worship, praise, embrace anything of this world is spiritual adultery in the eyes of God and one MUST repent of such. Again, there is a reason this narrow walk is so narrow, because it’s a life completely separated from the world and only those who are determined to follow on this road to righteousness will make it. Stop worshiping, stop glorifying the world and those in the world and come OUT of the world and be ye separate, God demands it.
