“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” — Acts 1:8

When Jesus departed and within 50 days later the outpouring came at Pentecostal with the arrival of the Holy Spirit, baptizing 120 and setting the stage for the greatest spiritual awakening on earth, it not only gave the early church the ability to operate in the promise of God’s word, but it also gave us in our time the ability as well.

One of the most wonderful aspects of serving Christ, is being led by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:14 says “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” When we come to Christ and allow the Holy Spirit access into our lives, he then begins to do a work within us, a work which begins to yield a life that is a reflection of Christ and his word.

So how does one walk in the spirit? The answer is quite simple – submission. When we submit our will and desires, ambitions and dreams, basically “our will”, and we in turn place our trust in what Christ did on the cross, then we have taken a step (by faith) that allows the Holy Spirit to have his perfect work done within our lives. This is the only way in which we can please the Lord, there is no other way. Not by works, not by intellect or head knowledge, but just simply allowing the Holy Spirit direct access into our life that will produce a life which is fruit bearing, productive and full.

This is what it means to be “led by the spirit” in all things. When Jesus was baptized, he was immediately led by the spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the enemy (Luke 4:1). When we trust God in all things as it relates to our life, conduct, will and direction, (all being done by faith) we simply trust the leading of the Holy Spirit to guide us and direct us. So many times people try to do it “their” way, they try to go one direction when God is attempting for them to go another way, this is the unction of the Holy Spirit trying to relay his message to the believer that their particular way is not a good one and should be avoided. When the apostle Paul and Barnabas began their first missionary journey, it was under direct unction and leading of the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:2), they did not do anything without first consulting the Lord  and his perfect will.

How does one walk in the spirit? They do so by simply saying, “God, I trust you in all that you have for me, I give you complete control.” and at that moment, though one might not understand or have the immediate answer readily available, the believer trusts in the wisdom that they know God will do what is best and then follow the direction they have within their spirit, it simply yields a peace that goes beyond all measure of understanding.

When I first heard the Lord speak in my spirit to go to China, I did not fully understand, yet I trust him (God) completely and I allowed the Holy Spirit to guide me and lead me and within 6 months I was literally walking the streets of Beijing and Chengdu China.

To walk in the spirit simply means you have placed your trust in what Christ did on the cross, you relinquish your will power and strength to God’s perfect will and then begin to allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you. The second aspect is prayer. Prayer literally is a must if we are going to be led by the spirit. Without a proper prayer life there can be no true spirit led life. They are one and the same. It is a combination that the believer needs to develop in their life, along with their regular studying of the Bible. Even if it’s 30 minutes, take the time to study and commune with the Lord, seek his face in all areas of your life and allow him to speak to you, guiding you in his perfect will. This is simply how one can and should walk in the spirit of God.

So many times religion, and those in leadership, make things so difficult for those in the flock to have a proper understanding of being led by the spirit, it’s nothing more than religious control. You don’t need that, all you need is to simply submit your will and your plans for God’s plans, nothing more, it’s that simple. Once you begin to do this every day of your life, then over time you’ll begin to notice a complete change taking place in your life, where you’ll start hearing the spirit of God speaking to you, gaining wisdom and understanding. Then you’ll realize that you are doing what we’re supposed to be doing – being led by the spirit. It’s truly that easy.
