“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1

Satan comes to kill, steal and destroy. He also comes to deceive, and one of the ways he deceives people is through death. The Bible tells us that it is appointed for man once to die and then the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Once an individual breathes their last breath, whatever state they are in, that is how they are going to meet God, in other words, those who died in sin without coming to Christ will die lost, eternally separated from God in a place called hell. Those who died knowing Christ, their sins forgiven will dwell with God in the Holy City forever and ever. They are called the redeemed. But it is that veil, between this world and the next, which Satan manipulates thousands, possibly millions, with regard to delving into the darkness in the hope of contacting those who have departed this world into the next, be it heaven or hell. This is called Necromancy, the contacting of the dead.

The year was 2008, my Grandfather who was dying of cancer, was in the last throes of death (where someone struggles with their breathing or violent movements just before death itself). I will never forget how that near midnight, the house was very calm, I could sense the entire evening something was not right, I could sense it in my spirit and what I sensed was death, death had come into our presence and was about to claim his rightful due.

By 3:30 a.m. he was almost gone, the death rattle he was making was consistent of someone who was about to make their entrance into eternity, the good thing was my Grandfather was saved, he made a commitment to Christ and settled his soul months before he began to lose reality due to the fast spreading of the cancer which invaded his body as well as mind. At 3:42 a.m. my Grandfather passed into eternity and met the Lord face to face. But something occurred which only I took notice of, the arrival of a familiar spirit.

As the local funeral home officials arrived at my grandparents home to remove the body, I caught notice of the wall clock, a strange antique glass clock my grandfather bought many years before which had consistently kept perfect time. Its precision though I noticed, had suddenly stopped, as we gathered round the bed to take one last look of my grandfather and then essentially moved away, I walked into the living room and sat down, when, for whatever reason, I felt the sense to notice the clock, it had stopped. The precision of perfect time keeping all came to a stop at 3:32 a.m.. Since that very moment when my grandfather passed from this life to the next, that same very clock simply stopped. To this day that same clock would never work again.

So what would cause a clock to simply stop its running, never to work again? The answer is found in 1 John 4:1. There are mysteries which the word of God does not give us clear understanding in regards to why demonic activity occurs in the lives of humans, other than what we know in the scriptures as it relates to our spiritual battles we encounter almost daily. Satan’s greatest weapon is the ability to deceive. This is where people who are vulnerable at certain moments in their life, that the enemy (Satan) comes and tries to sway the individual into greater deception. Case in point, my grandparents clock.

Many times Satan utilizes situations, in this case the death of a loved one, to further his ability to deceive, this is why many times people, especially after a death, Satan’s greatest opportunity to pull someone into the darkness is by spiritual darkness, and this normally takes the form of a familiar spirit.

The word familiar is from the Latin familiaris, meaning a “household servant,” and is intended to express the idea that sorcerers had spirits as their servants ready to obey their commands. Those attempting to contact the dead, even to this day, usually have some sort of spirit guide who communicates with them. These are familiar spirits. It must be understood by all that familiar spirits do not operate independently within the spirit realm (the other dimension), they are spirits which are ruled and lorded over by Satan himself, they obey his direct authority in everything they do, they are servants to the enemy.

Whether it be a sudden rush of wind in a room where the window is closed, or the aroma of perfume or something familiar that was once associated with the departed loved one, anything which causes one to wonder about such occurrences are being fooled by the enemy. This is nothing more than demonic forces luring the individual into a state of deception to get them to seek communication with the dead. Thus Necromancy.

America is seeing a sharp rise in Necromancy and witchcraft in these last days. From mediums who convince people they can communicate with the dead, to those who use clairvoyance (seeing the future by means of demonic help) to help others to gain insight into the future, the world is seeing an influx of sorcery like never before and it’s to serve one purpose, to deceive people into the occult. This includes the church as well.

I have encountered many who claim Christ and honestly believe they can or should communicate with the dear departed. This is occultism and it’s forbidden by God. The reason God has strictly forbidden us to try to communicate with the dead is because the dead are not aware of what is occurring in this realm once they departed, who they are actually dealing with are demonic spirits sent to deceive.

We live in both a physical world and a spiritual world, the two are constantly merging back and forth between the two, this is why the apostle Paul stated in Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

There is a reason why demons seek to deceive, they are attempting to bring that individual under bondage. It equally must be understood that God does not work through gimmicks, nor does he send “signs” that someone who has passed on is trying to let one know they are “ok” and miss them, God has given us one means and one means only – faith in Christ and Christ alone. While it is human nature to wonder about things which are beyond our comprehension, it must be understood that Satan comes with tricks, playing with the hearts and minds of people at a very emotional time in their lives, this is why it is ever important to understand that while we do not seek out information of those who have passed, we keep our faith in Christ and just trust him and leave these ideas and questions alone, it’s enough to know that one day all questions will be asked when we are with the Lord face to face.

Necromancy in any form, be it seance, visiting a psychic – whatever the case may be, is idolatry, it is sin. It is enough to know that we trust the Lord in all things and we do not lean on our own understanding. Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy, he will do whatever he can to lure one away from the truth, even if he has to use popular methods such as mediums or psychics, or even prophets who claim they can dream dreams for others to contact the dead, it is all designed to deceive, nothing more. Run from it and leave it alone.

  1. I find it quite a reach to connect the stopped clock to demonic activity. Why couldn’t a loving God stop the clock to signify and commemorate the very moment your grandfather entered into His presence? If He has the power to take him Home, is it such a stretch to think He has the power to stop the hands of the clock–something that was an important part of your grandfather’s world (timekeeping here on earth) but was now no longer needed? I think God gave you an important gift…a sign of HIS reality, and that HE lives outside the confines of time and space, and you missed it. You wanted to attribute it to something evil. How sad. I agree that we are not to try to conjure spirits other than the Holy Spirit. But don’t miss the good gifts of the latter. He is still alive and well and speaking to us.

    • When the soul and spirit of someone leaves their body, their “being” goes either to heaven or to hell, there is no further “sign”. We simply look to God for assurance that he will do right for every person who has died. God does not permit anyone who has died, to come back and give us a subtle nudge that everything is “ok”, that leads to necromancy. Which is why we do not pay attention to when those things do occur because they are not from God, but from the enemy.
