IS THE CROSS NOT ENOUGH?

“And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” Colossians 1:20

There’s a formula for success in almost everything in our world today. Formula for growing businesses, formula for investing, formula for educational achievement and a formula for relationship, not to mention other areas of our lives, such as a healthy well being. It seems everyone’s got a formula to being successful and sadly, even in the church there is a formula for success.

When I was a small boy, I would often help my grandmother bake one of her favorite cakes, a simple white cake made from scratch. My grandmother detested box cake mixes and would never hear of it that someone bought one and gave it to her – she always made it from her own recipe and the result was delicious. But she had a formula for creating her cakes.

Just as my grandmother had a formula for cakes, so does the church have a remedy for growth – the cross. The preaching of the cross is the only formula the church has been given to grow and expand the body, there is no other message, be it prophesy, the gifts, doctrine – nothing, other than the message of the cross. Yet the church has began the shift from preaching the cross, to using other methods to grow the body of Christ, and the results are anything but healthy, or productive.

Pastors using entertainment as a means to garner crowds, using Hollywood celebrities as a hook to gain entrance into a larger viewing audience to churches turning their pulpits into lecture halls where psychology or pop philosophy is the message of the day but not the cross. The apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1:18 “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

The question that must be asked is, Is the cross not enough? I believe the answer to that from the modern church is a sounding “NO!”.

The body of Christ is under attack from all sides, from false teaching to doctrines of devils, the church is facing its greatest trial since its initial beginning nearly 2,000 years ago. Yet the message of the cross is being systematically replaced for other messages, which I’ve already shared, this only compounds the problem and the end result is false conversions and a church whose not able to discern the truth from the false. In this antichrist spirit age, it is more important today than ever before that we reject anything which would replace the central message of the church (the cross) and re-establish the preaching of the cross in every pulpit, tent and meeting place where saints gather to be edified. The body of Christ must return back to its principles or suffer its fate. The enemy is marching across the world, stripping anything remotely able to reveal his tactics and his attack on the cross is central to his domination in these final days. The only thing we can do who know the truth, who preach the truth and adhere to the truth is to maintain the cross as the only hope for a lost and dying world, it’s the only thing which will survive when real tribulation comes.

“but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles,” 1 Corinthians 1:23.  Unless we preach Christ and him crucified, any attempt we might make will end in spiritual ruin.
