“I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them.” (Psalm 101:3)

In Greek Mythology, Medusa was the daughter of Phorkys and Keto. She was one of the three sisters known as the Gorgons. The other two sisters were Sthenno and Euryale. Medusa was the only mortal out of the three. She was originally a golden-haired and very beautiful maiden, who, as a priestess of Athena, was devoted to a life of celibacy; but, being wooed by Poseidon, whom she loved in return, she forgot her vows, and became united to him in marriage. For this offense she was punished by the goddess in a most terrible manner, transforming her very image, along with her hair, into a snake like reptile, who, upon looking upon her, men would turn to stone.

While the above story is myth, there happens to be a sort of truth with the concept of seduction much like Medusa, which, when men glance at what it presents, does not turn them into stone, but turns their heart and mind into chains, this modern day Medusa goes by the name of pornography.

Everywhere we look in our culture, sex is on display. From bra commercials to graphic depictions of sex, even fast food commercials have succumbed to the exploitation of sex. The sad reality is, our culture is infatuated with sex.

From soft porn images on television, to glorified celebrities who have made a name for themselves by making sex tapes for the public, the sexual exploitation of our society is in full throttle and by the current statistics, it’s only growing. Now teens are becoming caught up into sexting, whereby a young girl will take nude images of herself and send them to her boyfriend, or worse, to online sites where thousands of young boys and men will be corrupted by the image. This current age Medusa is capturing many men into her snare and causing the home a living hell. In fact, the home and marriage is under attack more now than at any other time in our culture, simply because we have easier access to pornography via the internet and cell phones.

This spirit of seduction is corrupting all those who fall victim to her seduction. Science tells us that when a man looks at a pornographic image, it forever will reside in the mind of that individual for the rest of their life, sort of like a file program, downloaded without any ability to erase what has been already viewed, that is the power of this Medusa’s touch. But there is hope for the believer who is desperately seeking a way of escape from this powerful seduction, and that is thru the cross.

James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” When we come to Christ, we die to him, that is to mean, our desires, our passions, our dreams and even our weaknesses in the flesh, they all must die at the foot of the cross. That’s what James is referring to, submitting to the Father, meaning to become completely submitted to the Father and his perfect will, not our own will – his will. When Satan comes to tempt us, he’s tempting us to those things which once held us in bondage, the old man.  But when we are in Christ, we are new in him (2 Cor. 5:17). This then gives us the ability to literally resist the enemy not through our human strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 6:13 Paul says, “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

Satan cannot claim any dominion over the believer that the believer is unwilling to yield, because the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit gives us that ability to break free from the chains of bondage, especially when it comes to the power of pornography. The fact is, porn and its power to snare must yield to the cross each and every time, for the cross has defeated Satan and all the powers of hell.

So if you are having trouble with pornography, or you find yourself struggling in areas relating to sexual stimulation, submit yourself to Christ and allow him to lead and guide you into freedom, for it is not God’s will you remain bound in that bondage, but come out in full victory, and most importantly, flee from its seducing image. The is the only formula for dealing with Medusa’s touch – the cross
