Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

When a person has no fellowship outside of Christ, they are subject to the enemy – unless they have someone praying for them consistently that they will be saved, usually a parent or grandparent or even sibling. The fact is however, most people (sinners) who are living outside the cross are living a dangerous life, and that danger is Satan himself.

Peter refers to Satan as a roaring lion, a being who is bent on destroying anyone and everyone that he can. The Bible often refers Satan as a serpent to denote his subtlety, in this case with Peter’s own description, he (Satan) is presented as a lion to express his fierceness and strength. When Peter uses the word “devour” it’s an actual Greek rendering means “to drink down” it implies utter destruction. That is both the power and evil this being has which God has allowed him to operate in, which is why Peter uses the word “adversary” in his description of Satan, the evil one. For Satan is in fact man’s opponent, especially to the Christian.

When we see people, famous or not, leave this world, it’s because of 1 of 2 things, they either were given over to the enemy because they would not yield to the call to repent, or their time on this earth had come to an end. Either way, for those outside the cross there is no true, genuine protection in the majority of cases, save one, a praying parent.

It’s a dangerous thing to walk outside the protection of Jesus Christ, for outside that protection, there is no ability to fight the enemy, this is why Peter was warning Christians that we are to treat Satan as a dangerous being, because he is. Make no mistake, Satan is called the “destroyer” for good reason, he kills all who fall victim to his power. But for the believer who has placed their hope and trust in Christ, Satan cannot touch them, yet he can oppose them at every turn.

Can people be cursed by Satan to the point where Satan comes and claims that individual thru death? Absolutely. I’ve seen it first hand in my own life through those I knew personally. I’ve seen an entire family ripped to shreds, some even died, all as a result of sin, sin brought forth its rightful wage, which was death. I’ve had friends die suddenly who did not know Christ, and died tragically. Again, they fell victim to the universal law of sin and death.

For reasons we truly do not know fully, Satan has been given permission to meddle within the lives of men, yet it was due to original sin (the fall). It is partly due to this reason that Satan has legal rights to certain people, which is why in Job’s case, Satan was given permission to kill his entire family, then Satan was given permission to afflict Job, but God forbade Satan to touch his life. The truth is, it’s a dangerous thing to live outside the grace of God thru Christ and what he did on the cross.

The only answer is to come to Christ, because outside of Christ there is no hope, there is no security, no peace, no comfort but worry, fret and fear. Outside the cross you are prey to the enemy. Come to Christ today, surrender your life to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and know the peace which goes beyond all we can know, and rest in him.
