confederate flag

The nation is being divided over past hurts, pride and arrogance and we are seeing this occur with the great divide between people over the confederate flag. Yet I would remind the Christian of this very important thing, whatever occurs in this world, whatever it is people are fighting for, defending or even blaming, we who are in Christ will have nothing to do with these issues simply because we are not of this world, and if this is not our home, or where our allegiance is placed, then the events which occur around us should have absolutely no interest to the believer. The apostle Paul makes it very clear in Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

This world is corrupt, it’s following the path of sin and death under the guise of an antichrist spirit, and while historical events which might have played out over 100 or 200 years would cause some to have some sort of emotion to it, for the believer all of these things should be viewed through the spirit of Christ and the word of God, and if we view them thru Christ, then we will see that ours should not have any interest whether or not a flag is praised, or jeered, ours is to preach Christ and him crucified, to evangelize the world.

Paul described it better in Philippians 3:8 “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.” Paul claimed it all as dung (waste, rubbish). No matter how this world reacts toward what it feels as important, to the believer nothing can be seen as of any interest other than the great commission. We who are in Christ are pilgrims, and the pilgrims entire ideology is one thing – passing thru.

I see so many Christians voicing anger and frustrations on both sides of the fence on this issue, but let me remind the believer that if they get caught up in the cares of this life, they will find themselves more focused on the issues that have no bearing on the church or the gospel, but on temporal things which are not eternal. Let us get back to what matters – the gospel. Until we do, we will be no better than the lost who are already blinded by sin, but rather let us march onward, not stopping to look at the events around us, but pointing others who need the gospel the most to the one thing they truly need – the cross. It has no bearing on our lives who are in Christ.

  2. Amen – We must be a light unto the world – If anything worldly issues can be used to point back to the cross. The spirit within compels us to speak but it should always be in love while pointing back to the cross.
