THE HILLSONG DECEPTION: HOW CONFORMITY AND RELEVANCE DECEIVED MILLIONS

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,” (2 Timothy 4:3)

The apostle Paul states in Ephesians 5:11 “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” Paul’s meaning was simple, anything which is rooted in the darkness of this world, be it false doctrine, false teachings, sin – anything which would hinder the believer, have no fellowship with it. The term “fellowship” is simply referring to defiling oneself. Yet for over a decade, millions upon millions of believers, especially young people, are being seduced by something which has (and is) proving itself to be something other than what it originally had represented itself to be. I speak of Hillsong out of Sydney Australia and the ministry of Brian Houston.

In the very beginning of 1990, the church took notice, along with the rest of the world, of a clever, but convincing series of commercials which began to sweep The United States as well as the U.K., it was the marketing genius of Hillsong which used contemporary music as a way to influence many to this new wave of a fresh injection of modern Christianity the church was particularly ready for. Yet what has come out of this style of worship is anything but holy or good.

Paul warns us in scripture that our priorities in this life is subject to the cross and less to self, following the admonition of our Lord Jesus Christ to have us deny oneself and follow him. Paul stated in Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” The idea Paul is speaking of is simple, to conform our thoughts, ideas, beliefs and behaviors to the patterns of this world, not only strikes at the heart of the cross, it strikes at the heart of the faith. When we compromise our walk by allowing things into our spirit which are not only harmful, but spiritually deadly, it begins a seed within the believer that will eventually lead to compromise and ultimately placing their faith into something other than the cross.

The problem with Hillsong is that they have sought the path to being socially or culturally relevant at the sake of compromise. Such is the case with any teaching or ministry which removes the core foundation (the cross) and replaces it with a more appealing message. In this case their (Hillsong) message is two-fold; the prosperity gospel and worldly music. The messages being delivered out of Hillsong is nothing but a departure from the truth, with its focus on entertainment and new age teachings. One of them being a lack of preaching out of the word of God and resorting to story telling, which Pastor Houston is very found of, much like that of current popular speaker and pastor Joel Osteen. Yet the problem lies with the belief which says that to draw young people into the church, one needs to remove themselves from scriptural truth and biblical teaching. In other words, the gospel (the message of the cross) the demand for repentance, the warning against sin and worldliness in the life of a believer has been forfeited to a more pleasing message. Such is what is occurring at Hillsong.

In recent months those within the leadership at Hillsong have begun to accommodate false teachings, and worse, a false religious system, that being the Roman Catholic Church. Darlene Zschech, Hillsong’s former worship leader, recently found herself catering to the Roman Catholic church and the Pope. Zschech went to Rome for an ecumenical gathering of Catholics, Protestants mega-fest worship event where thousands of young people had gathered together to celebrate diversity, as Darlene stated on her blog after returning from the event where she met Pope Francis, “A message was preached about the power of the Holy Spirit at work in our midst, and about the great grace of God which we are all dependent. Pope Francis asked the crowd to declare loudly,’Jesus is Lord’ three times and each time it grew in confidence and intention. Worship was lifted up which had the many thousands of people who attended all singing in free-flowing moments which to be honest, was reminiscent of a time I sang on a John Wimber crusade in New Zealand many years ago.” (source)

The push for worldliness, the mixture of secular entertainment such as rock music and even pop stars such as Justin Bieber (who happened to be a delegate at the Pentecostal assembly at Hillsong – source) and the introduction to a more positive, social gospel (minus the cross) makes Hillsong a dangerous mixture which is deceiving and seducing millions to its mystical new age tune. No other place can we see this fact than in the recent slant Hillsong is taking toward homosexuality and same sex marriage. One of Hillsong’s American branch churches run by pastor Carl Lentz has recently brought onto the stage two openly gay men who are to be married soon as its worship and praise leader. (source, source)

What is happening with Hillsong is simple, it is the grooming of millions of viewers and attendees to accept a soon coming deception on a global scale. When pastors remove the preaching of the word and resort to gimmicks, when worship teams use secular rock music in its forum, when the message of Christ and him crucified is regulated to just a past heritage fact and not a present truth, then it sends the signal that another message entirely is being preached, one which will never set people free from sin, from the bondage of addiction due to a lifestyle of sinful choices. The only thing which can set the captive free is still the cross by which Christ came and died – the cross. Take for instance pastor Brian Houston’s comment when asked about same sex marriage, “The world we live in, whether we like it or not, is changing around and about us,” he said. “The world’s changing, and we want to stay relevant as a church, so that’s a vexing thing.” (NY Times)

I believe that what is now occurring at Hillsong is anything but truth, but a lie. I believe that in the very near future we will see Hillsong begin to openly accept gay christians and the lie which says one can be a christian and still live contrary to the gospel as outlined by the writers of the word. Hillsong is a deception and a counter to the truth, not because it chooses to use the things of the world to draw people into their web of deceit, but because they have forfeited the truth (the cross) for a lie. Anytime one substitutes the gospel and replaces it with the things of the world to lure others into the fold, they are substituting the only thing which can save and set free the one who is needing to be free from sin – the cross. This makes Hillsong a preacher of another gospel of another Jesus and presenting another way, which will lead those who hear its message deceived and ultimately, spiritually ruined.

Yeah it is even worse than at first believed.
The music these days of Christianity yes has shown me over and over it is indoctrination through songs that are more secular than one could imagine.
Christian music is now owned through the same people who do pop music and rock music, Sony music group.

Now i have been warned of the Lord don’t bother with their music. It is all evil now there is always a false message behind it all and the television preachers love it, and promote it.

It’s of the flesh and most of it is substandard. Most of these Christian musicians want money and fame. They want to be rock stars. BUT mostly it is just crummy music. ajc

I do not know their stance on gay marriage, but I do know that what you’re saying about them taking the cross out of their message is a lie. They even have a song called”At the Cross” and on the project from last year, many songs about the blood of Jesus being shed including a song ” Scandal of Grace” which have these words, “Death, where is your sting?
Your power is as dead as my sin
The cross has taught me to live
In mercy, my heart now to sing

The day and it’s trouble shall come
I know that your strength is enough
The scandal of grace, you died in my place”
Is there really not anything else to write about? Tearing other Christians down?

    • Tammy says:

these are not Christians just as millions who claim Christianity are not Christians. Sadly one day you may wake up and it could be too late. Being fooled by the fakes and the antichrists which they abound unimaginably these days, just shows that you prefer mens teachings over the pure truth of the word of God which is Jesus Christ!

How about this. Unless you PERSONALLY have experienced this, you have no room to show judgement. As a Christian who hears hillsong messages often, I regularly check to make sure that the messages line up with scripture! Again this is a situation where the church is being judged by a whole based on the actions of a few people. We find this situation popular in culture today! No matter where it may be. As for the music, obviously the music is going to change to stay relevant, because there are young people coming up with interests in certain type of music that influence their taste. Me personally, I love country music and alternative. When it comes to alternative music, I like more of the ACTUAL MUSIC as opposed to the lyrics. So I get inspired by that. You can’t expect everything to happen exactly the same for 2000 years. If you do, then obviously, you’re going to lose a lot along the way. I do agree that we should go out into the world but not become a part of the world. But that doesn’t mean that everything in the world is bad. In my OPINION, your OPINION is skewed and maybe it isn’t that they are doing something wrong, but that you are stuck in the past. Just a thought.

      • Tammy says:

to the anonymous poster I don’t know why you believe we need to change to be relevant, the Lord and His word are never changing, I will not change to suit myself and certainly not the world and it’s loaded over flowing churches with false and fakes.

Hillsong is a huge church and always you can count on it being in error. I too used to listen to their messages and read along in the bible but the problem is not the bible but how they put pieces that do not go together with one verse here and one verse there put together to prove your chosen doctrine.

Everyone knows satan knows the bible better than any human ever, he was present for each part of it in it’s time of writing. Prosperity and hyper grace and acceptance of sinners in their present sin is a no no for the child of God. Disciples do not change to suit the world it’s people or themselves, we are constantly being changed by the Father as we walk forward in the Son.

    • Miss M says:

I have noticed, and I’ve seen that others have noticed, that the music of Hillsong does not currently agree with the message of Hillsong.

I have a friend who has stayed in a particular Methodist church in spite of the pastor teaching that there are many ways to God. My friend taught Sunday school. One Sunday, I think the Easter program, she had all of her kids marching through the sanctuary, crossing right in front of the pastor, with signs declaring that there is only “ONE WAY” (I don’t remember what all she said was on the signs). It was her way of trying to teach those kids and show the adults the truth. Her way of standing against the error.

I must admit that I have wondered if something similar is going on at Hillsong, because the music so frequently makes fully biblical statements that disagree with things their pastor says.

“The scandal of grace”… hadn’t caught that line. A very strange way of describing grace.

      • Anonymous says:

The Pharisees saw what Jesus was doing as a scandal, thus the name “scandal of grace”. that lyric wasn’t written based on them saying that grace was a scandal, but the fact the Pharisees had that view.

      • Anonymous says:

of course grace is scandalous – outrageous even that a perfectly holy God should taint himself with the vile sins of this world and pay the penalty of them on a cross – and die in a sinners place of course this is scandalous ask any muslim or Jew and they would believe it – ask me a sinner undeserving and unworthy of such grace and I would agree and yet – HE DIED FOR ME!

      • Dennis Chong says:

  6. rufus says:

i would concur that including secularism in gospel music is not ok but please withdraw the comment against the holy catholic church

  7. Sue says:

I agree that the path they are currently headed on is an ungodly one, however, this article makes it sound like they were always this way. The early Hillsongs albums had very powerful, biblically accurate and anointed songs on them. Staying away from them now is a good idea, but I think it’s ok to still pull out the old stuff. It’s still good.

  8. When people leave the Foundation of Jesus Christ and Him crucified, when they leave the Word of Almighty God, then you get this mess. The reason why Darlene Zschech saw nothing wrong with her getting to meet the Pope and gushing over him and the ‘service’ they were in is because her faith is not in Christ, but experiences. It’s not in Truth, but in folly. This is why we see the mess that we see today – because men, pastors, leaders have left the Foundation for another ‘gospel’ and another ‘jesus’ — the worship of man and the gospel of ‘self’.

  9. im4thwrite says:

PLEASE clean up your English! I gave up “reading” this article after a couple of paragraphs because the language usage is atrocious. (If you can’t handle it yourself, ask someone you know who has firm mastery of English.)

    • Tammy says:

you have some serious nerve. What does the words or lack of perfect grammar have to do with speaking on things that are being exposed to the light of the truth?

You are consumed with things that do not matter and show you are too busy thinking about earthly matters that mean nothing! Why not just get yourself lost in the Lord and allow Christ to live through you rather than castigating someones miniature mistakes in spelling?

It is no longer I who lives but Christ who lives in me! maybe ask the Lord for understanding of that verse!

  10. Greg says:

Haven’t been able to get to morning Church for a few months, so, being desperate to get into corporate worship, went along to Hillsong’s Sunday night service. I sat in Church, during the worship, feeling as if everything was wrong, out of kilter, somehow off. If I’m honest, it felt…bad, really bad. Don’t know what it was, but I think we should all pray for Hillsong, and everyone who attends.

Christopher, Christians that do not agree with your comments on Hillsong are among those that are also being deceived by false teachers and doctrines, and do not want to accept the truth whenever it is being presented.

  13. Curious says:

I’m curious, have you ever attended a Hillcong church? Because if you are basing your information on anything thing other than first hand knowledge you are in fact spreading gossip.

  14. Enoch-in-Christ says:

    HI EVERYONE.
LET US PLEASE GROW UP SPIRITUALLY. INSTEAD OF US SPEAKING ABOUT HILLSONGS; LET US PLEASE PRAY THE WILL OF GOD OVER THEIR LIVES. THE MESSAGE OF PROSPERITY IS THE MESSAGE OF THE KINGDOM AND IF YOU ARE RELIGIOUS, GET SAVED! UNDERSTAND THAT GOD WANTS TO PROSPER US- HIS PEOPLE. PLEASE REPENT FOR SPEAKING ABOUT PASTOR BRIAN AND JOEL OESTEEN THIS WAY BECAUSE YOU ARE BEING DISRESPECTFUL. HOW ABOUT YOU PRAY FOR THEM INSTEAD?
COMING TO MUSIC: “AS A SERVANT OF CHRIST, I BELIEVE THAT POP GOSPEL AND ROCK ARE NOT FROM GOD. BUT I ALSO BELIEVE THAT INTERCESSION IN UNITY CAN BE MADE ABOUT THESE MATTERS OTHER THAN TO SAY HILLSONGS DOES THIS AND THAT.
FIRST OF ALL, CHECK THE LOG OUT OF YOUR OWN EYE THEN YOU WILL REALIZE THAT IT IS NOT ONLY HILLSONGS BUT THE WHOLE CHURCH IS BEING DECEIVED. ALL OF US AS BELIEVERS WE MUST GET DOWN ON OUR FACES BEFORE GOD AND REPENT.
THE LORD JESUS IS COMING BACK SOON AND WE MUST NOT WASTE TIME POINTING FINGERS BUT WE MUST WATCH AND PRAY. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS HERE TO HELP US. THE LORD HIMSELF IS ALSO PRAYING FOR US. LET US PLEASE BE ONE IN SPIRIT ALL ACROSS THE GLOBE AND ASK THE FATHER FOR MERCY HENCE ALL OF US HAVE STRAYED OFF THE WAYS OF OLD.

    SHALOM,
    ENOCH

We realy live in the last days. When Hillsong started years ago I felt in my Spirit that it was wrong and never listend to any of their song. Now I know why. I thank the Lord for The Hily Spirit that helps us to decern from right and wrong. It is time that we as parents pray for our children and warn then of these things. We also need to pray for our Chuch Leaders that is blind to these things.

This church has lead thousands to Christ how can we ridicule a church for allowing Homosexuals to attend their church. The homosexual aspect has nothing to do with it. people have sin and live in sin. God does not have a scale of sin he died and has grace for our sins. articles of this nature are destructive and divisive

  17. This has nothing to do with religion. Brain Houston and Bobbie Houston (his wife) are the Jimmy and Tammy Baker of 2016. It is just a scam to make money to feed their wealthy lifestyle.

In Australia, Brian Houston was condemned by the Royal Commission into sexual abuse of children for covering up his dad’s sexual abuse of children in church. His dad was Frank Houston who founded Hillsong.

  19. John 14:14-24 (KJB) says:

    Praise God’s Son Jesus Christ

The devil’s ministers in sheep’s clothing subtly teach people to call upon “another Jesus” (2 Cor. 11:4) instead of always upon God’s Son Jesus Christ through his name as commanded by Jesus (1 John 3:23, John 14:6, 14-15, 1 John 5:13-14):
