soul sleep

Anything that takes away from the word of God is to be rejected outright, no matter how well meaning it might have been, or how sincere the person who is teaching such beliefs are, the facts remain the same, if any teaching goes against the word of God, that teaching must be labeled as false. This includes the teaching by some that says those who die in the faith never come out of the grave, or, they lie in perfect state in the grave itself, for decades or even centuries until the resurrection. This teaching by some and their religious affiliation is false, and it can be proven false by the word itself.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
because you will not abandon me to the grave (she´ôl),
nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
You have made known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalm 16:9-11)

I will ransom them from the power of the grave (she´ôl);
I will redeem them from death.
Where, O death, are your plagues?
Where, O grave, is your destruction?” (Hosea 13:14)

Come, let us return to the LORD;
for it is he who has torn, and he will heal us;
he has struck down, and he will bind us up.
After two days he will revive us;
on the third day he will raise us up,
that we may live before him.” (Hosea 6:1-2)

But your dead will live;
their bodies will rise.
You who dwell in the dust,
wake up and shout for joy.
Your dew is like the dew of the morning;
the earth will give birth to her dead.” (Isaiah 26:19)

Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’
Martha answered, ‘I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’
Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.‘” (John 11:23-25)

I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live…. A time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out — those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.” (John 5:25, 28-29)

It is clear in scripture that when a person dies, his or her spirit and soul will depart from their body to face God’s judgment, either temporarily in hell to await the final judgment, or in heaven, to be with the Lord. (Heb. 9:27)   The truth is, to suggest to the believer that when they die, they will simply return to the grave and lay there, unknowing of the world around them, this is a false doctrine and worse, it allows a spirit of fear to overcome those who hear this particular teaching, which is nothing more than a doctrine of demons.

Paul, the Apostle clearly stated in Philippians 1:23 “I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.” Notice Paul was not worried about his soul and spirit “sleeping”, but actually going to the Father, there Paul would (and currently is) standing before the Lord worshiping Christ our saviour. Even Stephen, when he was stoned to death, looked up and saw with his own eyes, Jesus standing on the right side of the Father, welcoming his servant home. Again, another attempt by false teachers attempting to hijack the word of God and make themselves their own authority of the written word.

Why is the resurrection important? Because it all comes from the cross. When Christ died, he came back three days later – the resurrection. His defeat over death and the grave gives us hope, for had he not defeated the grave, we too would be held by its grip upon us. Yet because of the resurrection, we now have that blessed hope of being with the Father in heaven.(2 Corinthians 5:6-8)

This makes the teaching of soul sleep not only false, but a doctrine of demons, run from it and stick with the word of God. For it is the promise of the resurrection, the promise that we who die in Christ shall not die, although our bodies will return to dust through the natural process of decay, our spirit and soul will continue to live, continue to dwell in eternity, and yes, even for the sinner, they too shall experience life after death, but in a place called hell. (Luke chapter 16)
